ACHIEVE GREATNESS WITH YEMI AND BIMBO DAVIDS
Day 18 March 2020
Counsel is a Necessity
Scripture Reference: “By wise counsel, you should make thy war, and in the multitude of counsellors there is safety” – Proverb 24:6
‘The heights attained by great men were not attained by sudden flights. But they when their contemporaries were sleeping kept toiling upward in the night’.
History repeats itself because people don’t learn from it. There is nothing new under the sun and there is no line of achievement you are seeking that someone else has not attained. We mustn’t just work hard; we must also learn to work smart. As we seek adequate counsel, we learn to avoid the mistakes of those who have gone ahead.
It was Solomon who said in the book of Proverbs that “By wise counsel, you should make thy war, and in the multitude of counsellors there is safety”. This proves that without adequate counsel one is not safe. Wisdom demands that we ask questions from those who have gone ahead so as to enhance our work now. I remember vividly applying this same principle while in the university. As a first-year student I made it a point to ask those in the second year about academic work for first-year students. They will reveal secrets and helpful tips about lecturers, courses, departments, etc. and perhaps the best ways to study. It will definitely affect your approach and equip you to be better. They could also tell you about lecturers that gave them some kind of tough time and possible ways to tackle them.
My friend, counsel is an absolute necessity. It’s possible to work hard and yet not produce the commensurate results due to lack of counsel. I remember the words of Jesus, He said, “Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” If you don’t seek counsel, you won’t get them and you may end up repeating the mistakes of the past.
Daily digest: The best advice is to seek advice from wise people.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, my wonderful Counselor, forgive me for the many times that I have turned to worldly counsel. I see that such a choice interferes with your work of grace in my life. Please remind me day by day to seek all of the counsel I need through the Holy Spirit unfolding the wisdom of your word. Amen
